Research Overview

Family Communication in the Age of Social Media

The family is presented as the fundamental unit of social structure and as the starting point for individual growth, experience, and success. The wellbeing of the family contributes to the wellbeing of society.

Social media now plays a major role in everyday life and can have both positive and negative effects. It has significantly changed communication and interaction between family members.

The presentation explains that weak communication between spouses may reduce understanding and intimacy, potentially contributing to emotional divorce.

Marriage is described as being founded on love, trust, deep understanding, and mutual respect. Replacing family dialogue with the internet and smartphones may widen emotional and relational gaps between spouses.

Effective communication is therefore presented as a foundation for marital stability because it allows spouses to express their feelings, thoughts, needs, and wishes while strengthening agreement, respect, and happiness.

Qur’an, Surah Ar-Rum, 30:21

Key Concept

What Is Emotional Divorce?

Emotional divorce is defined as a condition in which feelings and emotional connection are absent from married life. The spouses may live in the same home while relating to one another as strangers.

They may remain together to preserve the outward appearance of the family or to protect their children, even though affection, emotional connection, and mutual compassion have weakened or disappeared.

The negative effects may extend beyond the spouses and affect other family members, particularly children.

The situation may begin with accumulated disagreements, tension, and conflict. Married life may then become limited to occasional interaction and financial responsibilities maintained mainly for social and family appearances.

Emotional divorce is also described as silent divorce. The spouses remain in the same home but live in emotional isolation, each developing a separate world, resulting in emotional coldness and a loss of love and satisfaction.
